FAA Part 107 • Test Preparation

Complete Study Guide

Organized into the FAA's own 5 Areas of Operation — in the order they're defined and the relative weight they're actually given on the knowledge test, not an arbitrary list.

Area 1 of 5 • 15–25% of the exam (9–15 of 60 questions)

Regulations

Part 107 operating rules, certification, registration, and what you must report.

Area 2 of 5 • 15–25% of the exam (9–15 of 60 questions) • fails the most first-time test takers

Airspace & Charts

Reading sectional charts, airspace classes, Military Training Routes, and chart coordinate math.

Start this area →

Area 3 of 5 • 11–16% of the exam (7–10 of 60 questions) • lowest pass rate of any area (~62%)

Weather

METAR/TAF decoding, density altitude, and the weather hazards that actually affect a small drone.

Start this area →

Area 4 of 5 • 7–11% of the exam (4–7 of 60 questions)

Loading & Performance

Weight and balance, center of gravity, stalls and load factor, and how density altitude affects a loaded drone.

Start this area →

Area 5 of 5 • 35–45% of the exam (21–27 of 60 questions) • largest area, most total missed points

Operations

How to solve FAA-style questions

Use This Order

Identify what is being asked: AGL? MSL? airspace class? authorization? weather? operational rule?
Read the units. Many wrong choices deliberately swap AGL and MSL.
For sectional questions: identify boundary color/style → read floor/ceiling → determine your aircraft altitude → then decide authorization/legality.
For scenario questions: separate the rules. "Below 400 AGL" does not automatically mean "legal."
Eliminate absolutes only when the rule truly contradicts them; don't guess from wording alone.

What This Guide Is Based On

This is a condensed study aid, not a replacement for current FAA publications. For final preparation, use the current Remote Pilot ACS (FAA-S-ACS-10B), FAA Remote Pilot Study Guide (FAA-G-8082-22), FAA testing supplement FAA-CT-8080-2H, current Part 107 regulations, and current FAA UAS guidance.
